A Langa Voni is a traditional dress worn mainly in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamilnadu and Kerala by young girls between puberty and marriage. It is also called as two-piece saree or half saree. It comprises a Lehenga or Pavadai which is tied around the waist using string and an oni or Davani, a see thro
could be surprising, more so for a half-saree, "softly feminine and extremely posh", is what the youngsters in the west-influenced era feel about this desi wear. Many seem to now prefer something that elegantly wraps their waist rather than going in for a western wear in toto-- the low raise jeans.

But, how many are sighted wearing half-sarees? Well, even as there are not many, the lead ladies in the films have visibly brought about a change in the mind-set of girls, who had otherwise considered it to be outdated attire. It is after the release of some village-oriented flicks that half-sarees have become hot favourite.

E. Kamala, a college goer says, "Actress Shreya Sharan in the film Shivaji carried herself very well in colourful sets of langa-voni and this sensuous wear has since then deeply rooted itself in the minds of those who thought the attire had disappeared.” The undeniable reason could be the influence of the western culture in India, but despite fashion preceding over the customary dress, it is still worn by unwed girls till marriage in many parts of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

The fashion conscious have always loved the blend of old and new, and when there is a chance of experimenting style with tradition, then it's all the more merry, especially for those in orthodox families that are bound by restrictions. Be it wedding, college parties or a simple get-together, the girls of today love to dress to arrive in the attire that their grandmothers favoured decades ago.

However, langa-voni is not as visible as salwar-kameez, jeans or saree and this has been a major grouse for Tummidi Ramkumar, Managing Director of Tummidi Brothers. “I was brought up in a very traditional manner and I have three sisters. My mother taught us to protect our heritage and culture in every probable way and a woman clad in a half-saree meant a lot of respect to us. I am the chairman of a few colleges now, and I hardly happen to see anyone wearing this beautiful attire except on few occasions”, rues Ramkumar, adding that in villages and towns like Viziaanagaram and Srikakulam majority of girls prefer wearing langa-voni even now.

G. Prabhakar of Bommana Satya Rajkumar Textiles says that special ceremonies, especially when a girl attains puberty and half-saree function (it's celebrated in Andhra Pradesh when a girl attains 11 years of age) in the rural outskirts, half-sarees were still an attraction. This time-honoured garment comes in varied styles and for twenty year old Anu Raghav it is the latest half-and-half saree that is a hot favourite. This, she explains is more or less like a regular saree but two-and-half meter is in one colour and the rest is in another colour. "So when one wears, it looks like a half-saree. A contemporary twist to the traditional dress is what makes it so attractive and I prefer it for any modern wear," she says in excitement.

Homemaker M. Geetha purchased five sets of langa-voni for her daughter. "On occasions I deck my daughter up with gold ornaments, long plaited hair pinned up with flowers. My in-laws admire and appreciate it, as that depicts our Telugu culture”, adds she.

R. Trinadha Rao, owner of TMS Tailors, says he has regular customers wanting to stitch langa-vonis. “I have recently stitched four sets of half-saree for girls who are now settled in Hong-Kong”. With the designer piece set in exuberant colour combination and materials like Kanchi silk with zari butta, art silk with stone and Zardosi work, laser georgette, satin, crepe, Banaras with zari work and glass tissue - langa-voni attire has got its own traditional value and elegance which is waging a considerable comeback.
